Deposits section expanded to cover every deposit in the Residency Regulations 2026 — including the under-30 employer deposit and the spouse or civil partner deposit — with who pays each one and when deposits are returned.

Processing fees

Fee Amount
Residency application £250
Each dependant included in your application £250
Annual renewal £20

For example, applying with a partner and one child is £250 for you plus £250 for each of the two dependants — a total application cost of £750.

Note:

Some applications also involve a deposit — for example if the business is new, you are registering as self-employed for the first time, you are under 30 and earning below the salary requirement, or you include your spouse or civil partner. See deposits below.

If you live in Gibraltar without a permit

Warning:

If you live in Gibraltar without a valid residence permit, you can be fined £2,500.

You can appeal a penalty to the Supreme Court within 28 days of the notice.

When you need to pay a deposit

A deposit is required in the situations below. Who pays depends on your circumstances.

The business or employer pays the deposit if:

  • the business employing you has been registered for less than 12 months
  • you are a working director and the business has been registered for less than 12 months
  • you are an employee under 30 earning less than £37,500 and the salary requirement is waived — your employer pays this deposit for each year you are under 30, however long the business has been trading. See guidance and rules

You pay the deposit if:

  • you are self-employed and have not previously registered as self-employed
  • you include your spouse or civil partner in your application

How the deposit is calculated

For a new business, a working director or first-time self-employment, the deposit is the total of two parts:

  1. Social insurance — the total employee and employer social insurance contributions for the first year of employment. At the £37,500 earnings level, the capped contributions come to about £5,045 (employee £2,121 and employer £2,923).
  2. Tax — the tax payable on the average gross annual earnings in Gibraltar (£37,500) at 25%, which is £9,375.

This makes a total deposit of about £14,420. Because the social insurance part depends on your salary, the exact total can vary from one applicant to another.

If you are under 30 and the salary requirement is waived, your employer pays both parts calculated as if you earned £37,500 — about £14,420 in total — for each year you are under 30.

If you include your spouse or civil partner, the deposit is the total social insurance contributions payable under your employment contract for the first year of employment. There is no tax part to this deposit.

When the deposit is returned

For a business deposit (a new business, working director or first-time self-employment): the deposit is returned when the business stops trading, and if your residency application is unsuccessful it will be refunded — we aim to do this as quickly as we can. The Government can use its discretion to reduce a business deposit in certain defined circumstances.

You do not pay a deposit again when you renew your permit. The one exception is the under-30 deposit, which your employer pays for each year you are under 30.

See making a business application for what happens to your fees and deposit if a business-route application is refused.
