Follow these steps to apply for residency in Gibraltar.

You can complete the application yourself, or an authorised agent can complete it on your behalf.

Before you start:

  • Check the rules apply to you — see who the new rules apply to
  • Check you meet the criteria — check if you can apply
  • Get your documents and evidence ready
  • Be ready to pay the £250 processing fee, plus £250 for each dependant you include
  • Check if a deposit applies to you — for example if the business is new, you are registering as self-employed for the first time, you are under 30 and earning below the salary requirement, or you include your spouse or civil partner. See fees and deposits
Note:

If you are self-employed, a working director or a partner, you first need to submit a business application — and it must be approved before your residency application. See making a business application.

Check the rules apply to you

The new rules apply from 14 July 2026. Check who the new rules apply to.

Check if you can apply

Make sure you meet the criteria — including the salary, accommodation, age and vetting requirements. Check if you can apply.

Gather your documents

Collect your employment contract, evidence of where you’ll live, proof of age and your official vetting form. See documents and evidence.

Apply online

You apply for residency in Gibraltar online. Submit your application using the Start button at the bottom of this page.

Pay the processing fee

After you submit your application, you’ll be sent a payment link by email. The processing fee is £250, plus £250 for each dependant you include, and it is non-refundable. Some applications also involve a deposit — for example if you are registering as self-employed for the first time, or the business employing you has been registered for less than 12 months. See fees and deposits.

Vetting and decision

Your application is checked, including vetting and good standing. You must be of good standing, and the Government can refuse an application on public policy, public health or public security grounds.

You’ll be told the outcome of your application. Decision timescales will be confirmed. If your application is refused, you have a right of appeal — see detailed guidance and FAQs.

How we’ll contact you

You and your authorised agent will receive emails about the progress of your application from noreply.residency@gibraltar.gov.gi. This address sends messages only — you cannot reply to it.

If we need more information, we’ll contact you or your agent. Queries are handled by whichever of the three departments is dealing with that part of your application — the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs, the Department of Employment, or the Department of Business.

After you’re approved

Your residence permit is renewed each year. Find out how to keep it valid in your residency.

You will be taken to the online application form to complete and submit your application.
